What does a woodwork course cover?

An average woodwork course covers foundational skills such as cutting, sanding, and painting. Some 1-time or short-term woodwork courses will have specific assignments, such as making a stool, mobile phone stand, or musical instrument, and will only teach skills that are required to finish the final product. As for long-term or advanced woodwork courses, the syllabus will cover theory and application, such as wood properties, principles of mortise and tenon, use of woodworking tools (such as plane, handsaw, wood sander), applications of different hardware and adhesives, use of marking and measuring tools, and woodworking procedures, etc., so that you can fully understand the work of a woodworker and apply the knowledge and skills learned with ease.

How much does a woodwork course cost?

With short-term and interest woodwork courses, their cost depends on the class size, instructor, and syllabus. A short-term woodwork course that lasts 2 to 3 months (15 to 30 hours) ranges from $1,800 to $3,000. As for an interest course, it usually takes fewer than 10 hours and costs around $600 to $1,500, depending on the syllabus and assignments.

Short-Term Courses A 2- to 3-month course can allow students to learn about the principles and application of woodworking. For example, the Hong Kong Federation of Trade Unions (HKFTU) offers 12-session beginners’ and advanced home woodwork courses that last 2.5 hours per session, and the courses charge $2,050-$2,160. In the case of advanced courses, a home renovation woodwork course involves floor planning and cabinet making and a 5-session course (6 hours/session, totaling to 30 hours) charges $2,560. The Hong Kong Art School offers a “Kinetic Wood Automatic Workshop” that charges $2,120 for 8 sessions (16 hours) and the course aims to teach traditional woodworking skills and inspire innovation.

Interest Courses & Workshops If you don’t want to spend 2 to 3 months on a woodwork course, you can sign up for an interest course or workshop that is under 10 hours to finish one item. For example, the Hong Kong Institute of Construction has a “Carpentry and Joinery Workshop” that gives students 3 to 6 hours to make a wooden tool or storage box and the course and materials fee is around $600-$800. Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden has previously organized a 3-day (12-hour) woodwork demonstration that costs $1,200. Other woodwork interest courses and workshops are also available from PMQ and JCCAC, you can check out their websites for the latest course information.

Other Charges Some courses might require students to bring their own tools or purchase them from the school; for example, HKFTU charges $600 for registration and materials.

What courses does the Hong Kong Institute of Construction offer?

Hong Kong Institute of Construction offers certificate and diploma courses, with the latter being the equivalent of Qualifications Framework Level 3 and providing eligibility for the semi-skilled worker trade test, which will entitle students to a Construction Industry Safety Training Certificate (Green Card). These 2 full-time one-year courses are free and come with attendance and travel allowances. After passing the semi-skilled worker trade test, you can enroll in the Cultural Property (Woodware) Restoration Course, which covers Chinese and English cultural architecture and woodware in Hong Kong. HKFTU also offers joinery, semi-skilled worker, and skilled worker mock testing courses, which are jointly organized by Hong Kong Construction Industry Employees General Union and HKFTU Spare Time Study Centre. While a semi-skilled worker course consists of 4 sessions (10 hours) and charges $1,190, a skilled worker course has 7 sessions (17.5 hours) and charges $2,200.

What are the different carpentry and joinery trade tests offered by the Construction Industry Council?

The Construction Industry Council offers carpentry and joinery trade tests for semi-skilled and skilled workers to evaluate their knowledge and skills.

Trade Test for Semi-Skilled Workers The trade test includes a half-hour written test and a 3-hour practical test and costs $150. The test requires the candidate to construct and install a plywood door based on a drawing. You are required to have at least 2 years of related work experience or completed courses under the recognition scheme, plus a green card (or the equivalent).

Trade Test for Skilled Workers The joiner test for skilled workers includes a half-hour written test and a 6-hour practical test and costs $500. You are required to have at least 4 years of related work experience, at least 2 years of related work experience after being certified as a semi-skilled worker, or completed skilled worker courses under the recognition scheme, plus a green card (or the equivalent). If you failed the skilled worker test but qualified as a semi-skilled worker, you will be awarded a semi-skilled worker certificate.

What should you watch out for when enrolling for a woodwork course?

A woodwork course involves various tools and types of wood, so you should wear closed toe shoes and long pants to prevent injuries. In addition, most woodwork courses require students to be at least 15 years old to attend the course alone or be accompanied by a parent if aged 10. Please note that the accompanying parent is required to pay tuition.
